Doug Stratford was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1951. He grew up there playing on the Niagara Escarpment’s Bruce Trail, which ran a block and a half away from his parent's house.  This trail, which is several hundred miles long, runs similarly close to his family’s summer cottage at Francis Lake near Owen Sound. Through his youthful experiences roaming this vast escarpment playground, he developed a keen love of nature. From his father, a talented weekend painter, he developed an even deeper love of art.

After having acquired a Bachelor of Science degree at North Carolina State University, Doug worked in the Hamilton textile industry for a few years. At the same time he began studying art seriously at Mohawk College and Dundas Valley School of Art, working with such influential teachers as Mario Polidori, Almuth Lutkenhaus and Walter Hickling.

In 1979, Doug moved to Toronto where he attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. In 1982, his last year at O.C.A.D., he travelled to the college’s off-campus studio in Florence, Italy. There Doug was able to study with colour, the legendary beauty of the Tuscan hills surrounding Florence, a Disneyland for landscape painters.  He has returned to Italy to paint many more times, once with the Pantazzi Travel Grant from the Art Gallery of Ontario.

In 1984, friend and fellow artist Barry Coombs shared a studio with Doug at a former coffin factory in downtown Toronto. Shortly thereafter Barry helped Doug gain an entry-level position at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where he worked for 24 years both as staff and as an instructor until 2008.

In 1992, he was invited to take an extended painting trip to South Korea with his friend and fellow artist Kerry Kim, where he was able to paint both the vital, teeming, industrial centers and the quaint fishing villages of this beautiful, mountainous, Asian peninsula.

Doug's paintings, done principally in oils and watercolors, have been noted to achieve a strong visual impact due to an emphasis placed in them upon simplified color and design. "I know a good composition when one punches me in the face," Doug has been known to say.  He paints his landscapes on location while he produces figurative and portrait pieces in his Toronto studio.  If pressed to describe what he paints, Doug will sometimes jokingly reply, "Cityscapes, landscapes, and fire-escapes, which, I guess, makes me an escape artist."  Doug’s works appear in many juried shows, exhibitions and collections.

In the past, he has taught at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Ontario College of Art and Design, Sheridan College and at Island Arts of Grand Manan, New Brunswick. Doug currently teaches private art classes in his studio. His work can be seen at the Art Gallery of Hamilton Art Rental Service at anytime, or at his studio upon request.

A full time art teacher and artist since 1994, he also takes great pleasure in playing the drums, reading, and spending time at the family cottage.
